Question :
For those who believe the teachings are literal, where does one go upon enlightenment? People say the cycle of rebirth ceases, but where? Absolute nothingness? No consciousness? If so, how is that supposed to be better than remaining in samsara?

Result of enlightenment is Supreme Peace. Srimad Bhagavadgita 2.71 says “Para Shantim Adhigacchati – Attains supreme peace”. Buddha calls “Nibbana Sukha” – Supreme Peace of Nirvana. Panchadasi calls the enlightenment as supreme satisfaction – Trupti. Obviously these are not possible in Samsara.
