An enlightened Sage – Jivanmukta lives in the world free from concepts of I, me, mine. Sage acts in the world without a sense of doership. Sage lives in the world, performs actions with love and compassion for loka kalyana (welfare of world) without getting attached to fruits of action. Sage is like a lotus in the pond. Lotus grows in mud, lives in water but lotus has no qualities of mud and water does not stick to lotus. Similarly Sage lives in the world unaffected by the world.
