A seed requires right environment to sprout and grow.
Our spiritual tendencies (vasanas) are like seeds.
Given right environment, the seed of spiritual tendencies sprouts, becomes a tree and starts giving fruits of enlightenment.
The right environment is called satsang. Satsang means company of Enlightened Master Sadguru. Seed of spiritual tendencies is covered by hard shell of worldly impressions (laukika vasanas). The hard shell of worldly impressions gets broken in the presence of Sadguru and seeds of spirituality sprouts. Shri Shankaracharya says
“Satsanghatve nissangatvam” – Company of enlightened (Satsanga)breaks impressions of world (nissanga).
