Discrimination, or ‘viveka’, is a fundamental concept in Advaita Vedanta, emphasizing the ability to discern between various dualities in life. In worldly interactions, it involves distinguishing between right and wrong (dharma and adharma), guiding ethical behavior. For self-realization, viveka requires differentiating the self (atma) from the non-self (anatma) and recognizing the eternal (nitya) from the temporary (anitya). Such discrimination is essential for spiritual liberation. This discernment naturally leads to dispassion (vairagya), fostering detachment from transient worldly attachments and steering individuals toward the ultimate truth of the self.
