Question:
Why assume awareness is pure atman?? Why can’t awareness be an attribute which arises in mind when atman (something which exists) illuminates it??

Awareness is not an attribute of mind. It is independent of mind. Mind is nothing but thoughts. Are you aware of presence and absence of thoughts ? Since we are aware of presence and absence of thoughts, awareness is independent reality.
