Mundaka upanishad beautifully describes the witness (sakshi/atma-witness) and Jiva (individual consciousness/chidabhasa). Two birds are sitting in a tree. One bird (Jiva) is eating bitter fruits of tree (karma) and suffering. The other bird (sakshi – witness) watches first bird.
The first bird is suffering due to forgetfulness of its own nature as Jivatman (Jiva + atman = Jiva+ sakshi). Jivatman has to realize it’s true nature as Atman (sakshi) free from suffering. All teachings are given to jivatman to realize it’s true nature as sakshi (witness) who is none other than supreme Self Paramatman.
