Enlightened one is called Great Swan (Paramahamsa) unenlightened one is called swan (hamsa).
Mythical swan (special swan) has the ability to seperate milk from water and drink milk. Mythical swan represents jnani – Paramahamsa.
Ignorant soul (ajnani/hamsa ) gets the wisdom from Jnani Guru (Paramahamsa). Using discrimination (viveka) and dispassion (vairagya), individual soul (hamsa) seperates Self and non self (atma – anatma viveka, nitya-anitya viveka) to attain state of Paramahamsa – the enlightened one. This process of viveka-vairagya is like seperating milk from water by mythical swan.
