Individual consciousness identifies with body due to ignorance and believes that he/she is a person. Such a person is called Jiva. Personhood is illusion of being imprisoned in body-mind-illect. Spiritual journey is dropping of personhood.
Jiva who recognises the universal nature of consciousness is called Deva (Saguna Brahman)
Once Jiva/Deva recognises essential nature of consciousness as witness he/she is called witness (sakshi).
Once the witness realises unreality of the witnessed physical and mental objects, he/she is called transcendental SELF – Para Brahman.
Thus spiritual journey is from personal (Jiva) to universal (Deva/saguna Brahman) to impersonal (witness/sakshi) to transcendental awareness (parabrahman).
