In the physical plane (adi bhautik), the Festival of Lights Deepavali is the celebration of the coronation of Sri Rama.
In the spiritual plane (adhyatmik), Sri Rama represents the inner light atma Jyoti. Mother Sita represents the Jivatma (individual soul) and Ravana represents ego. After rescuing Sita from Ravana, Srirama and Sita ascend the throne in Ayodhya. Union of Sri Rama and Sita represents union of Jivatman ( individual soul) with the Inner Light of Self Atmajyoti the Supreme soul Paramatma. The impenetrable city of Ayodhya represents the non-dual (Advaita) realization. In other words, Deepavali is the celebration of non-dual realization – enlightenment.
