The ripening of a mango, which gradually develops sweetness and flavor over time, is similar to the maturation of the soul. Just as a mango takes time to ripen, the soul requires many lifetimes of experiences to mature and attain self-realization, as described in the Bhagavad Gita (7.19). While the enlightenment of certain beings may appear sudden, it is actually the result of many lifetimes of growth and evolution, leading to the realization of the Self in a particular lifetime. Jataka tales of Buddha speaks of hundreds of life times of maturity the seeker (bodhisatva) had to undergo to finally attain the Buddhahood.
