In general there are two types of enlightenment – suddent enlightenment (sadyo mukti) and gradual enlightenment (krama mukti). An analogy can be given here. If a tree has to felled, there are two approaches. Cut all the branches, then cut the trunk and finally cut the root. This represents gradual enlightenment (krama mukti)- progressive purification from karmic impressions (chitta shuddhi). Another approach to cut the tree is to dig deep and cut the root so that the tree dies. This approach represents sudden enlightenment. Through self enquiry one can cut root of ignorance and get sudden enlightenment ( sadhyo mukti).
