The traditional guru–shishya (teacher–disciple) unfolds through several stages:
- Seeker: An individual embarks on a quest for knowledge and spiritual growth, seeking guidance from a master or guru.
- Disciple (Shishya): Through dedicated learning and immersion, the seeker becomes a disciple (shishya), absorbing not only the teachings but also emulating the guru’s way of life.
- Devotee (Bhakta): As the disciple’s understanding deepens, there’s a transition from intellectual learning to heartfelt devotion. This culminates in complete surrender, where the devotee experiences unity with the master, realizing no separation between the seeker and the sought.
This journey reflects the essence of the guru–shishya tradition, where the disciple’s evolution involves deepening levels of surrender and identification with the master’s essence.
