Presence and Absence

There are three states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. The mind and world exist in the first two but are absent in deep sleep. However, the true SELF (I) remains present in all three states as a witness. The mind falsely identifies the SELF with the “I-thought,” based only on waking and dreaming experiences, ignoring deep sleep, thus creating a partial truth (ardha satya). Vedanta teaches that by analyzing presence (anvaya) and absence (vyatireka), one can discover the complete truth (purna satya) and realize the true SELF beyond the mind’s illusion.
